Class Syllabus
September - Introduction
We start with an overview of where fairy tales first originated, and what types of categories they are placed in. Pretty much a warm-up introductory lesson.
October - Classification Part 1: Aarne-Thompson
This lesson focuses on the Aarne-Thompson type of classifying fairy tales. Two fairy tales will be juxtaposed and looked at regarding this type of classification.
November - Classification Part 2: Propp
Vladimir Propp's system is the second widely used method to classify fairy tales. A list of Propp components are given, along with an example fairy tale and the application of Propp’s elements.
December - Famous Authors
A look at a number of famous Western European authors and their contributions in fairy tales. The list includes Hans Christian Andersen, the Brothers Grimm, and Charles Perrault, among others.
January - Midterm
February - Tales of the World Part 1
We’ll be traveling across different countries and sampling the cultural tales. Because of the amount of different places to cover, the lesson is split in two.
March - Tales of the World Part 2
The second part continues a look at tales from different countries and cultures.
April - Literature and Media
Fairy tales are alluded to in different parts of literature and the media. In this lesson, we’ll take a look at certain allusions and uses of fairy tales in art, literature, television, and movies.
May - Of the Present
The final lesson gives insight on how people can use fairy tales or how they can allude to fairy tales in their writing. Mythical beasts, themed fantasy romances, and even enchanted objects can spur on a fairy tale of your own!
