Final - Hailey Potter
The story is about a school of arch-mages. It starts in a university town in a magical universe. The story begins with temptation. Magic is increasing in power, and that plays an important role in the story.
Once upon a time there was a town named Merlow. In Merlow, there was a secret. Most of the town was magically born, and those very few who weren’t did not know. There was a university there that picked their own students, and the ones who weren’t magically born were never chosen. They never understood why, and just accepted it. This university taught the students how to live with the non-magical people, but also how to use their powers for good. At this university, once a year, the magical people would hold a meeting to discuss magical things. It was always led by the leaders of the community of Merlow; those who taught the students at the university.
It was time for the annual meeting and they all assembled. That’s when they realized something wrong had happened. There was a leader missing.
The three leaders were two men and one woman, each skilled magnificently. They were all friends, but they had their disagreements, which tended to come out most during the meetings. It was no secret that they fought, but no one thought it would lead to anything serious. When Gertrude went disappearing, they began to worry. What happened to her? The men had no answer for the community.
The truth was, though, that both men did know what had happened. They had been in a fight. Christophe had found a secret hallway in the university and had showed it to Gertrude. Gertrude quickly had run to tell Josiah what Christophe had truly found; the secrets to what made a person magical or non-magical. Knowing how dangerous it could be in Christophe’s hands, she had to tell Josiah. When Christophe found out though, he was angry, and had turned her into a gargoyle down that hallway. However, his magic backfired. When Josiah found out, he quickly ran to Gertrude. He couldn’t turn her back, as magic could only be fixed by the person who cast it, but he could make her protect the secrets. He did. Christophe was mad, and he planned to strike back. After the meeting.
But Josiah had other plans. He left straight after the meeting and went to a far away town. He went to meet a wise old man that he’d heard from his predecessor knew the secrets to magic. He wanted to turn Gertrude back, for it wasn’t fair that she would have to live the rest of the world’s time as a gargoyle in a university.
When the wise old man met Josiah, he instantly knew that he was a good person. He gave Josiah a potion, which, sprinkled on the gargoyle, would turn Gertrude back. Before he let Josiah depart, though, he gave him one piece of advice. “Retrieve the secrets before Christophe can reach them. If you don’t, the world will never again be a safe place for anyone.”
Josiah returned to the castle, but decided to retrieve the secrets before saving Gertrude. She let him pass, and he rushed down the hallway to find the secrets. After they were safely stashed underneath his clothing, he came back out to save Gertrude, only to find Christophe, standing above her, a sledgehammer on his hands, and rock all over the floor.
“What have you done?” Josiah ran, quickly realizing it was Gertrude on the floor.
“You gave me no choice. Give me the secrets or I’ll have no choice to do the same to you,” Christophe replied.
“You’ll lose them. I’ll never do it,” Josiah said. Christophe went to hold his hand up but Josiah was faster. They threw their magic at each other, shattering everything in their way.
The potion fell out of Josiah’s pockets. It flew across the room as magic crashed, and it exploded and fell upon the broken Gertrude. The magic restored her, and before either man knew what was happening, she grabbed a mirror off of the wall and ricocheted one of Christophe’s spells right back at him. He, in turn, became a living statue, unable to talk or move. Since it was his spell, there was no way to redo it. He became the statue at the beginning of this magic hallway.
Gertrude and Josiah returned to the leaders’ rooms to decide what to do with the secrets. It turns out it explained that magic in the world was increasing and that eventually all people would have the magical powers. Christophe couldn’t have done any bad with this information after all.
After being broken, Gertrude could no longer hold in her feelings for Josiah. She declared her love for them. They were married in a wonderful ceremony, and their children became the leaders of the community generation after generation, until one day all people in Merlow had powers and could all be educated. The people of Merlow then lived happily ever after.
